Lodge & Spa

The word “Kunkuru” means Roan antelope in Tswana, the predominant language of the area. The Malaria free Northwest Province of South Africa is a vast area of bushveld dotted with great many game reserves of varying sizes. One of the most distinctive is a farm named Kunkuru, thirty kilometres north of the town of Brits on the R511 Thabazimbi road.

The land here is predominantly flat bushveld with characteristic rocky granite outcorps (the Afrikaans name for the area is Rooikoppies meaning “Red Hills) and the vegetation is dominated by acacia thorn trees. The climate is hot in summer(September – March, 29 – 36 oC) and mild in winter (April – August 15 – 28 oC ) with an average rainfall of 650mm per annum.

Your adventure will commence from the moment you reach the luxurious Kunkuru Safari Lodge. Here a wide variety of game including Buffalo and general plains game exist in beautiful mixed savannah grasslands and thickets of indigenous bushveld. Hippo and Crocodile occur in the dams on the ranch. Kunkuru is one of the few ranches where Lions are legally kept and also boasts a successful Buffalo and Sable breeding programme.

African styled thatched chalets with en-suite bathrooms and air-conditioning will be your accommodation for your entire stay. The lodge consist of six chalets, sleeping 2/4 people, two dining areas, an open deck with an open fireplace, bar and lounge areas and a swimming pool.

Our camp staff will take care of your every need and evening meals are served around the campfire or in the dining areas. Laundry will be taken care of by our camp staff as and when required. Upon your arrival (after a relaxing drink) planning for the next day’s safari will begin. Game drives generally take place just after sunrise (for the early birds) and during the latter part of the afternoon towards sunset. Mid-morning and night drives can be arranged. Short bushwalks can be arranged as well as sun downers at “Lover’s Rock” or one of the seasonal dams.

With both Vaalkop and Rooikoppies dam just a stone’s throw away, birding at Kunkuru is seasonally spectacular. A wide variety of bird species occur throughout the year. Leopard occasionally pass through the area and have been spotted on rare occasions. Spotted Genet are reasonably common and together with Bushbabies, Owls, Nightjars, Jackal and Brown Hyena, bring the night alive. The Brown Hyena have a den in the Likkewaan Spruit.

Our 5 star spa is situated in the midst of this beautiful bushveld surrounded by various game species. Vervet monkeys, Nyala, Likkewaan and the odd croc inhabit the area around the small dam in front of the Spa. Before, during or after your treatments, drinks or light meals are served on the deck overlooking the dam.
